Ex. Steven Alpert, Dallas Texas. Originally purchased from the Beagle Brothers Antique Shop in London in the early 1970's. Brought back to England by a British officer before WWI)Period/Date: Likely last quarter of the 19th CenturyMaterials: Dense hardwood, animal hair, copper, soot paintDescription: This is an exceeding rare type of "ngoro" ghost mask. A number of features are telling of this mask's significant age. It is small and is of an early type that was not found in Sarawak in the 1970's when most "ngoro" masks came out. It has a deeply sensitive aesthetic with a concave face which is a hallmark of masks from a much older period. It is carved from a compact tight-grain hardwood seldom seen anymore. Several of the upper teeth are still covered with hammered copper and there are remnants of animal hair inset into the plugs around the eyes! The mask once had applied ears slotted into the sides. It is in remarkable condition for its age only having slight loss to the lower left back rim. Presented on a custom metal bronze-tone display stand. This is quite a unique specimen sure to be a welcome addition to any sophisticated collection of Indonesian art.Dimensions: Height 7.5" (19 cm), Width 4 3/8" (11 cm)Price: $7800 Currency Conversion FREE SHIPPING With (Buy Now) Feature!
