Authenticated by Pierre Dartevelle, Brussels) Period/Date: At circa 1900, likely 19th century Materials: Hardwood, black stain, libations, cord, trade beads, teeth Description: This Luba female is seen in the same kneeling pose with tucked back legs as many of the caryatid stools. She has a divided coiffure with raised scarification having acquired a magnificent blackened and encrusted patina from years of applied libations. It is clearly a very old piece. A portion of the left side of the base was reconstituted with plaster because of old loss caused from erosion and termites. It is probably accurate to say that if her face were just a "little" more refined, the price would be dramatically different.
