Tribal Arts And Antiquities >> African artDAN running mask.Antique bronze bells sewn to the chin. This very old mask is one of the best authentic Dan masks I have had in some time. With circular eyes and good patina, it is missing the clay and shell headdress. It does have the nail once used to support the clay portion hammered into the forehead. Multiple small perforations and replacement holes confirm this masks use, age and authenticity. This mask was from a private US collection. Price: $600 |

Tribal Arts And Antiquities >> Papua & New Guinea artCeremonial Bone Dagger
Ceremonial dagger made by the Schwimbu people, Sawos tribe of Papua New Guinea. This implement was used during debates inside the men's spirit house (Haus Tamberan, follow link). Myth has it that when the dagger is put upon the ground it moves toward the man with the most powerful talk. In actuality it is placed in front of the man speaking, and he has the floor for a limited time. The dagger is then moved to the next man designated to speak. The dagger is made from the bone of a cassowary bird. The head is clay mixed with lime and a wood oil called Guat, human hair, and eyes made from nasa shells. Height 7.5 inches. Price: $400 |
