Dan Mask - Liberia

Dan Mask - Liberia
10 ½ in.
Wood

All Dan masks consist of a number of universal characteristics: They have a concave face, pointed chin, a protruding mouth, an upturned nose and a high-domed forehead and are often covered in a rich brown patina from offerings. This Bagle mask possesses classic cylinder eyes and a coiffure consistent with the style of the Dan women. Every mask has its own function within the tribal ceremonies, "the Bagle mask is worn by men to entertain while the wearer dances, beats the musicians with a curved stick

Nyau Mask

Nyau Mask
"nkho komba" mask
Malawi
24 in.
wood, cloth

This festive mask is a mix of wood, fabric, hair and paint. It is used by the Malawi people to supervise young men during tribal initiations, and thus represents a unilateral belief of tribal elders as wise leaders. Some of the physical characteristics of the mask can be directly linked to aging individuals- extreme features, sunken eyes, and lack of teeth, but the image remains a positive one, guiding the inductees into their society with its strong, vibrant presence. Luba Hemba Female Stool

Luba Hemba Female Stool
Democratic Republic of Congo
13in.
Wood

Stools supported by human figures are important elements in the insignia of Luba rulers. At the investiture of a Luba king or chief, the ruler is seated on such a 'throne.' There are other 'regalia' staffs, bowstands, ceremonial axes, all of which justify the legitimacy of his reign. This particular stool is of the Buli style which depicts a single female figure, either kneeling or standing. The Buli styled face is elongated with pronounced cheekbones supporting hollowed out, deep-set eyes, with arching eyebrows. The body language is one of emaciated and stooped individuals. In addition to these descriptors, the Buli style depicts women with elaborate coiffures and scarification, this sculpture has discernable markings on her torso and an intricate coiffure which denotes a high ranking individual. (66, Koloss)

Baoule Monkey Mask

Baoule Monkey Mask
Ivory Coast
13 in.
Wood

The Baoule tribe comes from the legend of Queen Aba Pokou who led her people on an exodus towards the gold mining areas during the 18th century and had to cross a river where she was obliged to sacrifice her son to the river god, thus giving her people the name 'Bauli' which means 'the son is dead'. Owo Yoruba

Owo Yoruba
Pendant Mask bronze
Nigeria
6 ½ in.
Bronze

"This is a mask almost certainly made for the Obgo Society (during the 19th century, or earlier, by one of the best of the Ijebu bronze casters of the Idomowo quarter. It is external, unusual in my experience...it is thinly cast bolt in the front and the rear surfaces, the considerable weight being attributable to the fireclay core which is visible through the two lozenge shaped apertures at the back. The style conforms to that of the finest Ijebu work. The patina appears excellent it would probably never have been buried, but instead kept in the "ile awo" or inner sanctum of the Ogbo house." (Fagg letter) This mask is from the Lower Niger River area, Owo is a city located 70 miles north of Benin. "The artistic style of the Owo people relies on three distinct characteristics: the lips are carved in parallel lines, semi-closed eye with inlaid pupils, and a flattened T-shaped nose, typical globular eyes and body scarifications. They may date back to the 16th century." (85, Bacquart)

Pwo mask

This is a very nice version of the "outsider" character mask, which the Mbunda call "Simonda". Such masks vary greatly in size and quality. This particular example would have been collected in the north-western segment of Mbunda territory, as it has no forehead wrinkles.

Pwo mask

The Chewa use their masks at the secret Nyau Society performances for initiations, funerals, and other important events. The British banned the Nyau due to it's secrecy, which explains why mask examples are seldom offered for sale.

Ba Tonka - Batonga Figure

A very small number of guardian figures were collected from the Ba Tonka (Batonka or Batonga) in the early 1980's. Known examples tend to have Chokwe related features, which is explained by the fact that the Zambezi river connects the two cultures.
