They live in the central part of the country , about three hundred kilometres from the coast. The vast territory they occupy in this position is most densely forested and because of the richness of forest, lands in soil, minerals (Gold), it is known to be the richest in the country. Generally, the Ashantis (Asantes) are very industrious, their innate desire to live independent lives categorizes them as "Most Hardworking People". Mark Johnson started his long journey into the Asian and tribal art world collecting Central Asian Ikat Textiles in the early to mid 1970’s. Fascinated by the colors, unique designs, and technical expertise of the weavers, he went on a relentless quest to find more of these fantastic silk textiles. He traveled to Afghanistan and other parts of Asia and like many young explorers at the time, was taken by the beauty of the people and the depth of their ancient cultures. Each trip to Asia brought new discoveries and expanded interest in other cultures and artifacts. Eventually, he focused his attention on the Tribal Arts of Indonesia, especially the island of Borneo.

Africa Rising, LLC is headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia. The founders, Andrew Wilson and Giannella Alvarez, travel regularly to Africa, constantly updating the gallery's inventory. Beadwork in the ZULU cultural tradition.
Those who have travelled in South Africa and spent some of their time in the province of KwaZulu/Natal, might have been fortunate enough to have seen something of the colourful beadwork for which the Zulu in that part of the country are well known. Decorative beadwork is sold at many outlets in the region and in major centres throughout the countery, where some of these beaded trinkets have been offered to souvenir huners as "Zulu love letters". To appreciate the true significance of traditional Zulu beadwork, however, one has to understand how effectively the Zulu have integrated social values into their arts and crafts. Traditional colours, colour combinations and patterns are still found in modern Zulu beadwork but the real eloquence is rapidly subsiding under the pressures of urbanization and culture change.

In combination with transparent and translucent exhibit cases, the glass enclosures allow the natural, wooded environment of the Dumbarton Oaks landscape to envelope the objects on display. Within the pavilions, the collection is arranged by cultural and geographical groupings.

Rosalie Christensen was an artist, teacher, explorer, photographer, mother and gardener who spent much of her life battling cancer and lupus. She lived in America, Australia and Papua New Guinea raising two children alone over 3 continents.
On this site you will find illustrations and photographs from her Papua New Guinea archives along with examples of her art work and pictures from gardening projects. Dr. Tom Cummings who diagnosed Rosalie with lupus in the early 1980's and was her physician until her death has been kind enough to contribute.

Many of our artisans live in rural areas with little or no access to telephones, faxes, computers or e-mail. Most have no electricity in their homes. Transport is erratic, expensive and time-consuming. Due to cultural and language differences plus a high level of illiteracy, communication is often a problem for the artisan and client. This leads to frequent misunderstandings.
