Gold Weights

Gold weights
West of the current nation of Benin, in the forests and coastal areas of Ghana and in south-eastern Cote d'Ivoire, live a group of peoples known as the Akan. Between the eleventh and twelfth centuries, migrating Twi or Akan speakers, moving south from the savannas, mixed with established forest societies. By the early seventeenth century, the Akan had firmly established their hegemony.

Carlos Museum's collection

The Carlos Museum's collection of 19th and 20th century African art offers valuable insight into African artistic expressions in the variety of their forms, functions, and cultures of origin. A majority of the objects come from West Africa, with a focus on the numerous cultures of Nigeria, Benin (formerly Dahomey), and the Cameroon Grassfields. The rest are from the Equatorial Central region of the continent, located mainly in the modern state of Zaïre.

Priscilla Tyler and Maree Brooks Collection of Inuit Art

Tyler and Brooks’ passion for Inuit art took them back to the Arctic time and time again: they met people, visited their homes, took photographs, and taped conversations, songs, and stories in an effort to learn about the North and its culture. Their interest in art from all regions of the Arctic took them to many different places - works from Alaska, Siberia, and Greenland, as well as the Canadian communities of Baker Lake, Cape Dorset, Povungnituk, Holman Island, Inukjuak, and Pangnirtung, among others, are represented in their collection. t
